In a hatch back, you have to make your own enclosure for the speaker. You can't rely on the (essentially) sealed airspace created by the trunk and rear seats in a sedan or coupe. You also have to preserve precious cargo space. It is easily 10X easier in a sedan, coupe or SUV. Toss a 10" sub in the rear deck, no problem. The GTR has 2 of them. I can't remember the last hatchback Bose has made. The 350Z is the last I know, and that didn't exactly get rave reviews. It ain't easy, and I can't/won't get in to the issues there. There are give and takes with the supplier and the customer, 99.995% of the time the customer (Nissan) wins. That's all I'm saying. Is the OEM Bose system perfect? Obviously not. Is it better than an aftermarket system? No. Could I put together a better system for $500 or less? Absolutely, with today's technology. Take a snap shot of the time frame: The system was designed in 1988, 20 years ago. For a bone stock TTZ. The assumption may have been made, by either supplier or customer, that if the driver, of the target buyer audience for a $40K sports car, wanted to listen to the stereo, they'd do so with the t-tops on and windows closed.(my assumption). Today there are separate EQ programs and automatic detection of top position for convertibles, fabric or leather interior etc etc... Your bet is based on your current knowledge of a 20+ year old system. Unless you bought the car brand new in 90-96, or have listened to a rebuilt OEM system, judgments are being made about other cars based on the sound of a system well beyond its warranty period. Just sayin.
